SCIENTOLOGY VOLUNTEER MINISTERS OF MEXICO COMPLETE SEARCH AND RESCUE TRAINING

A team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers returned to Mexico City this week after completing a rigorous course of training in disaster search and rescue in various locales around Mexico. The training was supervised by Los Topos, the renowned Mexican search and rescue team featured in a National Geographic documentary on the Japan tsunami of 2011, and other top professionals. The purpose: to leverage experience and expertise gained to direct the activities of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response in the worst possible disasters.

The Volunteer Ministers were inspired to participate in this month-long training program through their association with Los Topos. The alliance between the two groups began in Haiti, where they worked together to deal with the devastation after the January 2010 earthquake. Since then, Los Topos volunteers and executives have completed Volunteer Minister training at the National Church of Scientology of Mexico. And Los Topos carried out much of the training program the Volunteer Ministers have now completed.

But it was a personal experience in Colombia last year that brought home the urgency of carrying out a program like this.

“When we were in Colombia to help with the floods last year, I realized the importance of disaster prevention,” says Alejandro Del Llano, who directs the Scientology Volunteer Minister activities for Latin America. “We were evacuating buildings under the direction of CINAT—National Circle of Aide Technicians—the top disaster response team of Colombia and one of the best in Latin America. We found and evacuated an entire community of 6,000 residents, completing the operation just before a nearby mountain collapsed in a mudslide that buried the entire neighborhood. We saved thousands of lives. This experience brought home to us the urgency of gaining full competence in every possible disaster response skill.”

The Volunteer Ministers’ training began with a week-long hospital course in March 2012 in the classifying and handling of urgent medical situations. It included learning to recognize the levels of trauma and assessing priorities and the appropriate medical procedure to use for each. They trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), procedures for minor and major injuries, and the care of children, pregnant women and the elderly.

Next came training in civil protection for emergencies occurring inside buildings or other structures. This included organizing and executing evacuations, establishing safety zones and assessing the risks of a damaged building to those inside and the surrounding area.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers then completed a course in underwater search and rescue where they learned to dive in rivers and at sea under extreme conditions including frigid temperatures, strong currents, and low or no visibility.

“We had to dive into waters where you literally could not see anything,” says del Llano. “We overcame our natural fears and are proud of the competence we gained, which makes it possible to help others in ways we were never able to do before.”

With these skills learned, they trained in initial assessments of disaster sites, including immediate care of victims and damage control—how to prevent loss of lives by spotting and evacuating dangerous zones or buildings likely to collapse.

Training in search and rescue under collapsed structures came next. This included analyzing the condition of structures, learning to penetrate and advance inside and underneath buildings, and tracking and extracting victims.

In a private hospital under the supervision of the emergency medical technician in charge of civil protection, they learned CPR, rapid diagnosis of external injuries, and how to transport and remove injured persons from confined spaces such as cars and rooms.

Part way through their training, the volunteers were invited to deploy as part of the civil defense unit to serve when more than 3 million converged for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in the city of Silao in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Del Llano knows there is more to learn, but the training completed gives the team the immediate expertise needed to contend with the situations most likely to be dangerous in disaster zones.

“We have immersed ourselves in a previously unknown world of professional disaster response,” he says. “Coupled with our knowledge of the technology contained in theScientology Handbook, we are now able to perform an important service in times of disaster.”

Church of Scientology Recognizes Educator for Human Rights Initiative

LOS ANGELES—The Church of Scientology International Human Rights Department presented Founder and President of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI), Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, a certificate of commendation Saturday, praising her completion of a 13-country journey promoting human rights education. Coinciding with the 13th International Day of Families, Shuttleworth was acknowledged particularly for empowering children and families through human rights education.

A veteran educator, Shuttleworth founded Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) in 2001 to activate youth in preserving human rights for others and themselves. “Children who have no concept of their rights are at far greater risk than those who are informed,” said Shuttleworth.

During the three-month trip across Mexico, Central and South America, Africa, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Taiwan, Japan and Hawaii, Shuttleworth lectured to thousands of students at 36 universities and schools on the articles of the United Nations Universal Decaration of Human Rights. She also met with more than 120 educators, community leaders and national and state human rights authorities to discuss ways of increasing human rights education and awareness.

In addition to carrying out international human rights educational programs and hosting an annual Youth Summit, YHRI publishes educational booklets and DVDs based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, an international document ratified by the United Nations December 10, 1948. YHRI also provides teachers a free Educator’s Kit which can be ordered online at www.youthforhumanrights.org

Scientology Volunteers

Next week is volunteer week and the Scientology Volunteer Ministers really bear acknowledgment. Over the past three months hundreds of Scientologists have gone to Haiti to help in the relief effort there. These are just "regular" people -- they had family members, jobs and other responsibilities they set aside to go. People of all ages, but mostly young people, full of energy and intention. And they saved lives. The work they did in the hospitals and clinics--if it had not been for them literally hundreds, maybe thousands, would not have survived in those first few weeks.

So here's to these brave and dedicated volunteers.

Church of Scientology of Taiwan Honored by Ministry of Interior

Scientology recognized for its work to improve the community

The Ministry of Interior of Taiwan recognized the Church of Scientology for its humanitarian and social betterment activities with its Excellent Religious Group Award. Mr. Liao-Yi Liao, Minister of Interior of Taiwan, presented the award at the NTUH International Convention Center in Taipei. This was the sixth such acknowledgment received by the Church for its work to improve conditions in Taiwan.

Dedicated to helping the next generation avoid the tragedy of drug abuse and addiction, over the past year the Church of Scientology conducted 99 drug education events in Taiwan and distributed 45,150 anti-drug booklets.

To promote human rights and ensure students know their rights and stand up for the rights of others, last year the church delivered 144 human rights lectures to 4,780 students.

Scientology missions in Kaohsiung, Taichung and Ping-Dong did volunteer work in local prisons, helping over 2,500 inmates with a program that promotes morality and helps the individual regain his or her self-respect.

The President of the Church of Scientology Taiwan, Dr. Mei-Tsu Lee, accepted the award from the Minister Of the Interior on behalf of the Church. Scientology and the other religious groups honored by the Ministry were acknowledged for their charitable contributions to social programs or their direct participation in activities that improve the community.

L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Scientology religion, once wrote “A being is only as valuable as he can serve others.” Through their service, Taiwanese Scientologists have truly proven their value to their community.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Join Disaster Relief Effort in Kisii, Kenya

Kisii Disaster Site

Scientology volunteers provided disaster relief when a building collapsed last month in Kisii, Kenya.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers from Nekuru, Kenya rushed to the town of Kisii in June when a three-story building under construction in that city collapsed, killing five and injuring 14.

The result could have been far more serious, were it not for civilians who reacted immediately and came to the aid of those in need. On seeing the collapse take place, workers at a nearby road construction site abandoned their work and brought four earthmovers to help in the rescue operation. Four ambulances that happened to be at hand rushed those who were rescued to a hospital.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers from Nekuru, working on a strictly volunteer basis, arrived on the scene and helped with the search and rescue operation, providing emergency workers with whatever assistance they needed.

Then, to deal with the trauma of those directly involved, the volunteers provided Scientology assists, procedures developed by L. Ron Hubbard that provide relief in times of stress and disaster by addressing the emotional and spiritual factors in trauma, illness and injuries. Once the immediate situation was under control, the Scientology volunteers then provided seminars in Scientology assist procedures to empower people in the city with tools to deal with any future disasters.

For more than 25 years, in more than 150 nations, Scientology Volunteer Ministers have brought effective solutions to bear on the problems, large and small, of the world. In 2008, Scientology Volunteer Ministers administered one-on-one help at 23 separate disaster sites.

Communication Skills can Avert Conflicts: Scientologist

A terrific article coming out of Nepal today:

Kathmandu, September 27

A Scientologist said at a workshop on Wednesday that good communication skills can resolve many conflicts.

Speaking at a week-long training for security forces on effective communication skills, Marion Whitta, director, Scientology International Volunteers Goodwill Tour India and Nepal, said, "A policeman who knows how to communicate is much more powerful than a bullet will ever be."
She said the root of every conflict is miscommunication or misunderstanding and the effective communication skills can resolve most of the conflicts of the world, rendering arms useless.>>more
