Russian Scientologists Dedicated Month to Human Rights

In honor of the 10th anniversary of their annual Human Rights Marathon, Scientology Churches and Missions throughout the Commonwealth of Independent States have dedicated the entire month from July 5 to August 4 to human rights awareness activities.


Major events were staged in cities throughout the CIS. The month’s activities began July 5 in Kiev with the grand finale held Saturday, August 4 in St. Petersburg.

It began with a round table at the National Information Agency of Ukraine. Attorneys and civil servants participated alongside librarians and human rights activists including volunteers and staff of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union and the Kiev Science and Education Administration, a former deputy (MP) of the Supreme Rada, the Ukraine Parliament, and members of the press.

Next, a panel discussion with the interagency coordinating council responsible for law education in Kiev Oblast (province). Topics included standards in law education, creation of human rights educational TV and radio programs, and coordination of government and public human rights activities.

In city after city, including Perm, Ufa and Kharkov, volunteers erected a “Wall of Change” in the city center. Passersby symbolically wiped out human rights abuse, first by inscribing the wall with human rights violations and then erasing them, signifying individuals and groups working together to achieve human rights.

Malaya Konushennaya Street in the heart of St. Petersburg became “Human Rights Way,” with pedestrians adding their signatures and hand prints to long rolls of paper that paved the street, affirming their support of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The grand finale was a “Wall of Change” and a human rights concert. Singers, dancers and musicians entertained thousands in the heart of St. Petersburg as a musical representation of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – freedom of expression.

Although the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights has existed for 63 years, many millions are trafficked into slavery, forced to live under oppressive regimes, or denied the freedom of assembly, speech or religion.

The dedicated work of Scientologists of the CIS in the field of human rights reflects their commitment to the vision of Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard who wrote, “Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream.”

SCIENTOLOGY VOLUNTEER MINISTERS OF MEXICO COMPLETE SEARCH AND RESCUE TRAINING

A team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers returned to Mexico City this week after completing a rigorous course of training in disaster search and rescue in various locales around Mexico. The training was supervised by Los Topos, the renowned Mexican search and rescue team featured in a National Geographic documentary on the Japan tsunami of 2011, and other top professionals. The purpose: to leverage experience and expertise gained to direct the activities of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response in the worst possible disasters.

The Volunteer Ministers were inspired to participate in this month-long training program through their association with Los Topos. The alliance between the two groups began in Haiti, where they worked together to deal with the devastation after the January 2010 earthquake. Since then, Los Topos volunteers and executives have completed Volunteer Minister training at the National Church of Scientology of Mexico. And Los Topos carried out much of the training program the Volunteer Ministers have now completed.

But it was a personal experience in Colombia last year that brought home the urgency of carrying out a program like this.

“When we were in Colombia to help with the floods last year, I realized the importance of disaster prevention,” says Alejandro Del Llano, who directs the Scientology Volunteer Minister activities for Latin America. “We were evacuating buildings under the direction of CINAT—National Circle of Aide Technicians—the top disaster response team of Colombia and one of the best in Latin America. We found and evacuated an entire community of 6,000 residents, completing the operation just before a nearby mountain collapsed in a mudslide that buried the entire neighborhood. We saved thousands of lives. This experience brought home to us the urgency of gaining full competence in every possible disaster response skill.”

The Volunteer Ministers’ training began with a week-long hospital course in March 2012 in the classifying and handling of urgent medical situations. It included learning to recognize the levels of trauma and assessing priorities and the appropriate medical procedure to use for each. They trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), procedures for minor and major injuries, and the care of children, pregnant women and the elderly.

Next came training in civil protection for emergencies occurring inside buildings or other structures. This included organizing and executing evacuations, establishing safety zones and assessing the risks of a damaged building to those inside and the surrounding area.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers then completed a course in underwater search and rescue where they learned to dive in rivers and at sea under extreme conditions including frigid temperatures, strong currents, and low or no visibility.

“We had to dive into waters where you literally could not see anything,” says del Llano. “We overcame our natural fears and are proud of the competence we gained, which makes it possible to help others in ways we were never able to do before.”

With these skills learned, they trained in initial assessments of disaster sites, including immediate care of victims and damage control—how to prevent loss of lives by spotting and evacuating dangerous zones or buildings likely to collapse.

Training in search and rescue under collapsed structures came next. This included analyzing the condition of structures, learning to penetrate and advance inside and underneath buildings, and tracking and extracting victims.

In a private hospital under the supervision of the emergency medical technician in charge of civil protection, they learned CPR, rapid diagnosis of external injuries, and how to transport and remove injured persons from confined spaces such as cars and rooms.

Part way through their training, the volunteers were invited to deploy as part of the civil defense unit to serve when more than 3 million converged for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in the city of Silao in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Del Llano knows there is more to learn, but the training completed gives the team the immediate expertise needed to contend with the situations most likely to be dangerous in disaster zones.

“We have immersed ourselves in a previously unknown world of professional disaster response,” he says. “Coupled with our knowledge of the technology contained in theScientology Handbook, we are now able to perform an important service in times of disaster.”

Meet a Scientologist—Sometimes, the Best Way to Help is by Saying “No”

At 16, Scientologist Lynda Allender had to make an important choice. The past 36 years have proved she chose well.

When she was 16, Lynda Allender was in love. But she was also in trouble.

The trouble came from drugs. She began with marijuana and “progressed” to cocaine. But when she started experimenting with heroin she was threatened with losing the most important thing in her life. That’s when she had to make a choice.

“I was a high school freshman, my boyfriend was a senior—we were completely in love. He wouldn’t just stand by watching me do myself in,” says Allender. “He made it brutally clear—if I didn’t stop taking drugs it was over between us.”

She decided to quit, and her boyfriend, a Scientologist, helped her through the rough spots with Scientology techniques. Allender was relieved to find how simple it was to overcome the cravings.

When she was 18, the couple moved from their hometown in the Silicon Valley to San Francisco, where they trained in the technology of Scientology religious counseling—called auditing, from Latin audire, “to hear or listen.” They audited one another and Allender eventually dealt with the issues that predisposed her to using drugs in the first place.

The couple married in 1979, and that high school romance not only survived, it is stronger than ever, weathering the many challenges of starting out young, earning a living, and raising two happy, well-adjusted (and drug-free) children.

Allender, 52, is a human resources specialist. She owns her own company that consults small businesses on California labor laws.

But her real passion in life is helping others with Scientology in much the same way her husband helped her.

“It is such a gratifying activity,” she says. “The problems people run into in their lives often seem impossible to resolve. But Scientology auditing and training make it so easy to sort things out and get things going in the right direction.”

The Problems of Work on DVD Earns Telly Award

Golden Era Productions was presented a Telly Award for The Problems of Work on DVD.

The Problems of Work on DVD was honored Monday, June 13, with a Bronze Telly Award for Charitable/Not-for-profit films, the second coveted industry award presented this month to the 66-minute filmed presentation of L. Ron Hubbard’s book The Problems of Work—Scientology Applied to the Workaday World.

Produced by Golden Era Productions, the central dissemination center of the Scientology religion, The Problems of Work film on DVD is drawn directly from the pages of L. Ron Hubbard’s book, illustrating basic Scientology principles for use in everyday life.

BEGINNINGS OF THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY

With the publication of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, on May 9th, 1950, a national movement began. By summer people who had read Dianetics flocked to L. Ron Hubbard’s home in Elizabeth, New Jersey. They wanted to know more. They wanted to become more proficient in Dianetics auditing. And with this demand, four individuals (an attorney, a publisher, a doctor and an engineer) approached Mr. Hubbard to form a Hubbard Dianetics Research Foundation (HDRF). With his consent the Foundation was formed in Elizabeth.

Appearing on the New York Times bestseller list for 26 consecutive weeks, Dianetics created a storm of interest across the United States, requiring that four additional foundations be formed across America where students were trained on Dianetics.

With his continuing research into the mind, Mr. Hubbard, by late 1951, found himself studying the human spirit to answer the question of who or what was operating the mind. With this basic and elementary discovery of the human spirit, a new subject was founded: Scientology.

Groups of student from around the world traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, where Mr. Hubbard held classes and lectured on the subject of Scientology. As a result students returning to their areas formed Scientology groups not only in America, but in England, Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand and South Africa.

As the human spirit was truly in the realm of religion, a group of Los Angeles Scientologists formed the first Church of Scientology in February 1954. By the middle of the next decade over a dozen Churches of Scientology existed in some five countries along with scores of Scientology groups in dozens of nations.

I can remember the first time I came face-to-face with death and man did I crash on that. It was twelve years later that I finally came to terms with it in a Scientology counseling session. I was amazed how much it helped me to look at that and free myself from the remorse. It really didn't help anyone for me to still be mourning 12 years later, and it certainly had not helped me whatsoever.}

Founding Chairman of Challenger Center for Space Education is Keynote Speaker at Writers of the Future Event

June Scobee Rodgers, Founding Chairman of Challenger Center for Space Science Education, will deliver the keynote address to winners of the L. Ron Hubbard Writers and Illustrators of the FutureContest, the Contest judges and several hundred attending guests this Saturday night at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The Challenger Centers have the purpose to carry on the educational mission to utilize the excitement of space to inspire and motivate our nation's school children to take interest in mathematics, science and technology. Scobee Rodgers will address the evening's attendees on the vital role played by writers and illustrators of science fiction as the dreamers of a new tomorrow which will inspire the next generation of scientists.

It is not only as the founding Chairman of the Challenger Space Centers that she will be addressing the audience. She is also a published author. And, as the 25th anniversary approaches of the Challenger 51-L Teacher in Space mission, commanded by her late husband Astronaut Dick Scobee, she says that she is pleased to launch a new project, ''A series of novels that I developed with Writers of the Future judges Rebecca Moesta and Kevin J. Anderson, called Star Challengers.''
The highlight of the ceremony will be the announcement of the year's two Grand Prize winners who will each receive $5,000and release of the annual anthology L. Churches of Scientology in 14 countries joined forces with Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) last week conducting a global petition drive in support of human rights education. Based on the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the petition calls on governments to make human rights education mandatory and to conduct human rights education campaigns. The Declaration was ratified by the UN General Assembly in 1948 and defines the fundamental freedoms and human rights in the United Nations Charter. Since that time it has influenced national constitutions, treaties, laws, and human rights institutions the world over.

“The Universal Declaration does more than condemn discrimination, slavery and torture,” said Rev. Bob Adams, spokesperson for the Church of Scientology International. “Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the full scope of these rights and so have no way of knowing when these rights are violated. It’s not something only for governments to care for—we all have an interest in these rights.”

Scientologists, their families and friends took to busy street corners, festivals and shopping centers and city squares, where they presented booklets and videos, engaged in human rights discussions and gained support for the cause on giant petition boards. Active on many fronts of human rights initiatives and reform for five decades, the Church sponsors a worldwide human rights initiative to raise awareness and respect for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This includes distribution of millions of booklets and the airing of 30 public service messages, both based on the Declaration’s articles. In 2009, the Church sponsored the production of a new educational film, The Story of Human Rights, a 20-minute entertaining and historical account of the development of human rights, and a new human rights educators kit. To date, these materials have reached over 500 million people in 180 countries.

Scientology in Australia Attacks Human Trafficking—Demands Education to Protect Exploited Children and Women

Scientology volunteers demand effective action to knock out modern slave trade. Australia is the destination country for victims trafficked from East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, says U.S. State Department.

Scientology Volunteers in Sydney circulated a petition at Sydney Town Hall November 16, calling for mandatory human rights education in Australia to eliminate human rights abuses. One of the worst abuses is the criminal practice of human trafficking in the country. As many as 27 million are enslaved in the world today according to the United Nations, earning perpetrators upwards of $34 billion Australian annually. Some estimate half of those trafficked come from Asia-Pacific and that at least half of all victims are children.

According to the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report for 2009, despite major strides by law enforcement, Australia is the destination country for many of the victims trafficked from East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, particularly the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, and Thailand.

Members of the Church of Scientology of Sydney held Monday’s petition signing because they believe Australians would never stand for human trafficking and other human rights abuses in their country if they knew of it.

Scientology Churches around the world sponsor the largest non-governmental information campaign the world over, which has made the Universal Declaration of Human Rights known to more than 900,000 people through public service announcements, booklets and petition drives.

To begin the month, a little history lesson:

This month was originally named Sextilis in Latin, because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, when March was the first month of the year. About 700 BC it became the eighth month when January andFebruary were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days. Julius Caesar added two days when he created the Julian calendar in 45 BCgiving it its modern length of 31 days. In 8 BC it was renamed in honor of Augustus, who did not take a day from February (see the debunked theory on month lengths).

New Scientology Church in Seattle

Exciting times! Another new Scientology Ideal Org, this time in Seattle:

Sixteen hundred Scientologists and their guests packed the street in front of 300 West Harrison in Seattle today for the opening of the new Church of Scientology of Washington, a milestone for the congregation formed 54 years ago.

Mr. David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center and ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, officiated, acknowledging the Scientologists who spearheaded the drive to build the new Church. >>

Haitian Student Rcovered!

I've been following the story of the Haitian engineering student who was brought to the US for medical care and a prosthetic leg. He has his leg and he's out of the hospital. That he is alive at all is testimony to the power of a being (he was buried alive for days before his father pulled him out of the rubble of his college).

He went to a university in Delmas, on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, that completely collapsed. I've seen photos of the mounds of concrete that were left after the earthquake. That his father found him at all is a total miracle.

There was a Scientology volunteer minister who talking him into getting the amputation and arranged for him to get the prosthetic. The boy wouldn't be alive today if it were not for his doing that.

A very heartwarming story that proves there is good in the world.
